

As a flex, it was used to counter other cavalry, to do short range recon, to pose threats to flanks, but the reality is, when cavalry actually took part in battles and really got stuck in, it was when lines were broken. Cavalry for most settled nations was used as a flex, and I don't mean a pose down :), and a finishing tool. Again, there are exceptions to this, and they usually ended in absolute disaster. Lastly, cavalry never has, just plowed into and run over close order infantry with sufficient depth. Horses are insanely expensive to upkeep, outside of a couple of edge case scenarios and contrary to popular belief, they are also significantly slower at a strategic level than infantry over any sort of multi-day march.
